Swadlincote bus station will close for 14 weeks from 6 January 2026

Delayed work to renovate a bus station at a Derbyshire town is due to start next month, closing the site for 14 weeks.

Changes to Swadlincote bus station in Civic Way, were promised in 2024 as part of the county's Bus Service Improvement Plan but they never progressed.

The scheme will redesign the layout, aiming to improve access for passengers with limited mobility.

From 6 January 2026, all services will be relocated to two temporary bus stops on Civic Way for the duration of the closure, with new departures in place.

One stop will be opposite the town's health centre and the other opposite the police station.

Services affected will include the Derby via Melbourne route, several Burton upon Trent lines, the East Midlands Airport via Ashby de la Zouch route, and services to Leicester.

All coach excursions and tours will also depart from a temporary bus stop.

'Improve significantly'

The new bus station will only serve buses and coaches, and will be resurfaced with new lighting and signage installed.

New bus shelters with seating and real-time digital screens will be installed.

There will also be a large screen on the pavement from the town centre showing all bus times.

A car park adjacent to the bus station will have its entrance and exit combined for drivers as part of the revamp, closing it for 12 weeks.

Changes to the car park include new parent-and-child spaces and disabled bays relocated.

Derbyshire County Council, which will be carrying out the improvements with site owners South Derbyshire District Council, said there would be "particular focus" on accessibility and renewed infrastructure.

A spokesperson added: "The current layout does not work well and we are confident it can be improved significantly, particularly for passengers with limited or restricted mobility."
