Manx disability charity's activity scheme given £76k cash boost

A £76,000 boost will allow an activity scheme for children with disabilities to be extended to all school holidays, a charity project has said.

Manx Mencap received the Manx Lottery Trust grant to expand a summer scheme run alongside charity Autism in Mann.

The sessions, for four to 17-year-olds, include arts and crafts, sailing, swimming and animal therapy.

Kelly Quaye said Manx Mencap now planned to host more sessions adding new weekly dancing and gym classes.

The grant would allow the charity to develop its offerings beyond the summer season, and give young people with learning disabilities the opportunity to participate in a range of activities throughout the year, she said.

The funding would also cover the salary of a new staff member dedicated to organising and promoting the scheme, and the hiring of a person to provide assistance in mainstream environments.

Ms Quaye said the charity's mission was to promote inclusivity and provide choice.

The grant would have a "significant and positive impact" on the island's learning disability community "enabling participants to thrive", she said.

Chairman of the Manx Lottery Trust Stephen Turner said the holiday club "has proven to be vital resource for children and young adults with learning disabilities, autism, and social communication needs".
