Suspect caught after falling off e-scooter in chase

Footage has captured a suspect who led police on an "unusual" chase on an illegal e-scooter before losing control and falling on to the street.

Nottinghamshire Police said Graham McCarthy rode through a red light and weaved in an out of traffic during the pursuit through Nottingham city centre on 6 May 2025.

The chase came to an abrupt end when McCarthy, who officers believed had links to local drug supply, tumbled over near the junction with Lower Parliament Street as he tried to pass a bus.

McCarthy, of Denstone Road, Nottingham, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving without insurance and driving without a licence, and was sentenced to 75 weeks in prison.

The 43-year-old also admitted criminal damage and possession of Class B drugs with intent to supply.

He was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on 16 March, and disqualified from driving for 19 months.

PC Elizabeth Shone added: "Fortunately, [McCarthy] avoided serious injury during the subsequent crash, which very clearly shows the inherent dangers of attempting to ride these devices at such high speed.

"As McCarthy has now discovered, private e-scooters are treated in the same way as any other mechanically propelled vehicles when offences of this nature are committed."
