Raac: Harlequin Theatre to be closed for some time, says council

A Redhill theatre will remain closed "for some time" due to unstable concrete being found, according to Reigate and Banstead Borough Council.

The Harlequin Theatre shut in September after the discovery of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (Raac).

In December, the venue's pantomime was moved to a big top in Redhill Memorial Park.

Reigate and Banstead council said it is now exploring its options for the rest of the spring and into the summer.

This was due to "the extensive presence" of Raac, it said.

The authority said the theatre would have a presence in the Belfry Shopping Centre, and said it was "exploring sharing space at alternative local venues and potentially expanding The Harlequin Outdoors offer during the summer months".

Council leader Richard Biggs said: "We are very grateful for the support and patience we've received on this journey so far, from our loyal customers, community partners and production companies.

"It has been a challenge but the success of the Big Top panto is testament to what can be achieved and I'm excited about the new opportunities."
