Footbridge installed at new Ashley Down Station in Bristol

A footbridge over a new railway station in Bristol has been completed.

Network Rail engineers set up a crane and began work on the walkway at Ashley Down station on Christmas Day.

The station will be between Temple Meads and Filton Abbey Wood, with services eventually running to the new YTL Arena in Filton.

"Despite a windy start, the whole structure is now in place," Network Rail said on X, explaining seven cranes in total had lifted it into place.

Ashley Down railway station will be built on Station Road, just south of the Ashley Down allotments and is due to open in 2024.

It is one of several planned to open in Bristol in the next few years.

The site used to be home to Ashley Hill station, which closed in 1964 as part of the Beeching cuts, which saw roughly 5,000 miles of track closed and more than 2,300 stations axed in the 1960s, mainly in rural areas.

Ashley Down station is part of the MetroWest Phase 2 project, which will also see new train stations built at North Filton next to the new arena, and at Henbury.

The West of England Metro Mayor previously said improving public transport was "so important to help people get from A to B" and that it would help the local authority meet its "ambitious" net-zero target.

In July, Portway Park and Ride station, the first railway station to open in Bristol for nearly a century, started operations linking Avonmouth with the city centre.
