Shipley: Plans resubmitted for former working men's club

Plans have been resubmitted to turn a "dilapidated" former working men's club in Shipley into nine apartments.

Developers were denied permission to transform the Woodend Working Men's Club on Woodend Crescent in September.

The plans involve creating four one-bed apartments and five two-bed dwellings, with the building said to be in need of "considerable renovation".

A decision on the amended plans is expected to be made by Bradford Council in May.

Councillors initially rejected the plans after they said the development would "provide unsatisfactory living conditions" due to the lack of natural light and restricted views, in part due to the designs.

Parking proposals were also criticised by planning officers.

The latest design and access statement features an amendment to the site plan.

The planning application said the site was "currently not in use in a dilapidated state and in need of repair".

The building was reportedly targeted by arsonists in September and "requires considerable renovation".

It was also home to a "reasonably sophisticated" set-up used to grow cannabis following its closure.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson confirmed no arrests have been made in relation to the arson.

"A full revamp and modernisation are required to attract potential occupants and address the local authority's demand for quality but affordable housing," the application stated.
