More than 100 firefighters from Fire and Rescue New South Wales (FRNSW) tackled a major blaze in the Surry Hills area of Sydney. Some of the walls of a multi-storey building collapsed, with FRNSW stating there were concerns the fire could spread to neighbouring buildings.

People in central Mexico have been told they may need to leave their homes, after recent activity from the Popocatépetl volcano. The volcano has been spewing gas, ash and molten rock over the last week, and hundreds of tremors have been recorded.

Hundreds of people attended the funeral of a World War Two RAF airman at St Clement Danes Church, Westminster, after a campaign for a "fitting send-off". Flt Sgt Peter Brown, originally from Jamaica, was one the last so-called "pilots of the Caribbean", a group of Afro-Caribbean volunteer RAF personnel.
