Silver, art and antiques from a Grade I listed castle have fetched £1.48m at auction.

More than 1,000 items from Corby Castle in Cumbria went up for sale across three days last week.

Tennants Auctioneers said bidders from across the world had taken part in the sale, with the total hammer price exceeding estimates by 55%.

The highest-selling item was still-life painting, The Day's Hunt by Giorgio Lucchesi, which fetched £42,000.

"It has been a privilege from start to finish to handle such an important country house collection from the North of England," director and auctioneer Jane Tennant said.

The sale comprised more than 1,130 items including period portraits, 17th Century tapestries and decorative 19th Century furniture and clocks.

Auctioneers said the silver collection was the "stand-out success", with all 324 lots selling for about £699,290.

It included an 19th century Indian silver dish and cover, sold for £22,000, and a massive Edward VII silver monteith bowl which was sold for £16,000.

A bronze mantle clock dating to 1870 went for £8,500, while a pair of bronze candlesticks fetched £9,000.

More silver from the castle will be sold in a second sale in March.
