The beach has been shut to the public since 19 February

A beach has been closed for more than four days following reports of a suspected ordnance.

Millom Coastguard Rescue Team was first alerted to the item at Eskmeals beach, in Cumbria, at 18:25 GMT on 19 February, according to the Marine Coastguard Agency.

It said the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team had attended the scene over the weekend but the beach was still closed due to "ongoing work".

Millom Coastguard Rescue Team said it was maintaining a safety cordon around the site alongside Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team. The Ministry of Defence declined to comment.

The coastguard rescue team said: "For safety reasons the beach remains closed to the public.

"Please respect the cordon and do not enter the area past the red flags."

It is unclear when the beach will reopen to the public.
