The security alert in Newtownabbey began on Tuesday

A number of viable pipe bombs have been discovered during a security alert in County Antrim.

Police said they were called to the Upper Hightown Road area of Newtownabbey at about 15:50 GMT on Tuesday, following a report of a suspicious object.

Officers attended along with a bomb disposal team, who carried out a detailed examination of the area.

The devices were made safe and removed for further forensic examination.

Cordons have now been lifted and the Upper Hightown Road has fully reopened to traffic.

Police said their enquiries were continuing and have appealed to anyone who may have information to contact them.
