A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following a fatal shooting.

Police were told that a man had suffered a gunshot wound at a house in Conifer Road, in Coxford, Southampton, at about 20:00 GMT on Wednesday.

The man, in his 40s, had suffered serious injuries and was later pronounced dead at the scene.

A 31-year-old man from the city has been arrested on suspicion of murder and possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Investigations are continuing at the property and police said detectives would be conducting house to house enquiries in the area.

Det Ch Insp Clair Trueman from Hampshire police said: "Any time you hear of an incident involving a gun, it will undoubtedly be of concern for local residents.

"Officers were quickly in attendance last night, and we have a man in custody today as we continue our investigation.

"We are working hard to better understand what has occurred at the address, and to locate the family of the man who has died so that we can support them at what we know will be a difficult time."

Deputy district commander for Southampton, Ch Insp Chris Douglas added: "If you do have any concerns, then please do speak to us when you see us, and if you do have any information which could assist the investigation team, then I would urge you to share it as soon as possible."
