Five key roads in Wiltshire are to be closed for resurfacing in the coming weeks.

Swindon Borough Council said the five roads would be resurfaced before the end of February as part of a £3.75m plan to fix deteriorating routes across the area.

Sections of Aldbourne Road, County Road, Aylesbury Street, Bridge End Road and Westcott Place will all be resurfaced between 19 January and 20 February, depending on the weather.

Councillor Chris Watts, Swindon Borough Council's cabinet member for the environment and transport, said: "These aren't the only roads that need work but, due to our limited budget and resource, we need to carefully consider where we will carry out resurfacing work."

The works included are as follows:

  • Aldbourne Road - 19 January to 20 January between 08:00 and 18:00 and 21 January to 22 January between 08:00 and 18:00
  • County Road – 21 January to 27 January between 08:00 and 17:00 and 20:00 to 00:00 for relining works
  • Aylesbury Street – 27 January to 30 January between 08:00 and 17:00
  • Bridge End Road – 9 February to 13 February between 08:00 and 18:00
  • Westcott Place – 16 February to 20 February between 08:00 and 18:00

The roads to be fixed were agreed on in the council's local transport plan in March 2025, with the local authority holding a budget of nearly £6m for road maintenance in 2025/26 - £170,000 of which is set aside for pothole repairs.

The council said there was, in total, an estimated £50m backlog of road repairs.

"Anyone who's recently used Aylesbury Street to get onto Station Road knows exactly why we're doing this work and it's a similar situation for the other locations on our list," Watts said.

Swindon Borough Council said it had also recently had confirmation it would receive £30m in government funding over the next four years to tackle road maintenance.
