A motorist has been arrested after a pedestrian was hit by a car and injured, having just left hospital that very evening.

Essex Police was called to Southend Road in Corringham after the incident, involving a black Lexus car, at 19:40 BST on Friday.

The pedestrian, who was walking away from Basildon University Hospital via Nether Mayne and crossing the A13, had serious injuries and was back in hospital. Police said they had originally left the hospital between 17:30 and 18:00, but did not say why they had been there.

A man, 64, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving whilst unfit through drugs and released under investigation.

Police have appealed for people with information including dashcam footage to contact them.
