Flood defence work aims to protect properties from flooding

Guernsey's government is looking for a contractor to investigate drainage and ground conditions to help it plan flood defences at the Bridge.

The Environment & Infrastructure Committee (E&I) said a risk of flooding by water "overtopping" at the Bridge was a key consideration for several sites earmarked for housing nearby.

It said the flood risk was small but "is real" and predicted rises in sea levels meant it must be considered to protect sites including Leale's Yard.

E&I President Adrian Gabriel said: "Creating a flood defence doesn't happen overnight. It is requiring careful planning, including the need for these site investigations."

Investigations would help understand the layout of the Bridge under the road surface, as well as drainage and ground conditions, officials said.

The results would be used to help draw up concept and more detailed designs for the flood defences, they added.

The committee said it was "very conscious" of the visual impact, the importance of good access and parking for business and customers in the area, as well as creating an effective and cost-effective flood defence.

The States bought the majority of Leale's Yard last year and is also looking at a master plan for the wider Braye du Valle area.
