Weather warnings for ice and snow have been extended across Wales over the weekend and into Monday.

A warning for up to 10cm (4in) of snow is in place until 11:00 GMT on Sunday affecting Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Conwy, Gwynedd, Pembrokeshire and Powys, along with a separate ice warning for a larger swathe of Wales until noon.

The Met Office has another warning in place from Sunday afternoon until 12:00 on Monday with up to 3cm (1.2in) of snow likely for some and up to 8cm (3.1in) on high ground, and increasingly wintry showers overnight.

North Wales Police has advised against all but essential travel in some places due to conditions affecting the A55 in Gwynedd and Anglesey.

In a Facebook post, the force said there were "issues in relation to the current weather conditions" affecting the A55 west of Abergwyngregyn, Gwynedd, to Anglesey, as well as the Felinheli bypass.

"Please avoid travelling unless absolutely essential," it added.

The Met Office has also cautioned that traffic maybe affected by the weather and advised people to plan ahead for journeys and allow more time.

Untreated pavements or cycle paths may become treacherous or impassable for those travelling on foot, it warned.

Pembrokeshire council said it would start to find accommodation for known rough sleepers from Friday to Sunday because of the cold weather, in a measure known as Severe Weather Emergency Protocol.

The council has asked anyone who knows someone who is sleeping rough to provide emergency shelter for them over the weekend.

Dr Rowena Christmas, chair of the Royal College of GPs in Wales, said the most at-risk groups during cold weather were people over 65, as well as those with chronic illnesses or mobility issues.

"We always see a big increase in GPs having patients coming to see them with health problems when it's cold and we see a lot of admissions for acute illness to hospitals," she said, adding that emergency departments often get full as it can be difficult to discharge people.
