V&A Dundee has confirmed plans for a multi-million pound revamp in time for its tenth anniversary in 2028.

The museum, which opened in September 2018, is planning a fundraising drive to overhaul its open spaces.

Last February, the UK government announced a £2.6m investment towards remodelling and extending the museum's Scottish Design Galleries.

The museum said the new work was the result of feedback from visitors.

The building, which was designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, has welcomed more than 2.5m visitors since it opened.

However, it has previously drawn criticism over a perceived lack of content, with one reviewer describing it as "an £80m public sculpture" and others criticising the size of the Scottish Design Galleries.

The design galleries were originally the only free-to-enter attraction in the museum, but it has subsequently introduced smaller free exhibitions in its lower and upper levels.

These include a 20,000-photo collage of Dundee and the popular Dundee Tapestry.

A V&A Dundee spokesman said that museums were "places that must always change."

He added: "Since opening in 2018, through our work and valuable audience feedback, we have learnt that the Scottish Design Galleries can grow to display more objects and to celebrate Scottish design history, design today and look to the future of design."

The museum said the UK government money would allow it to "re-imagine and expand these permanent galleries" and share more about "historic and contemporary Scottish design and more local Dundee design stories" with its visitors.

It said the new additions to the galleries would be drawn "from the V&A, across Scotland and beyond."

The museum's chairman Tim Allan told the Courier newspaper the additional fundraising would "hope to match" the UK government's £2.6m.

The V&A Dundee spokesman added: "We plan to raise the additional investment from private donors to support the transformation of the wider visitor experience at V&A Dundee, building on everything we have learned since opening about what our visitors want and how they want to experience the best of design from Scotland and around the world."

He said this would involve audience consultation and research later this year, including speaking to community groups and schools that the museum works with.

V&A Dundee's income for the last financial year was £9,113,500, with an expenditure of £8,569,265.

It currently receives £3.8m per year from the Scottish government.
