Allan Thursby appeared at Carlisle Magistrates' Court charged with negligence manslaughter

A man has appeared in court over the death of an eight-year-old boy who was shot on a farm.

Allan Thursby, 64, did not enter a plea at Carlisle Magistrates' Court charged with the negligence manslaughter of Jay Cartmell.

The eight-year-old died on 28 September 2024 after suffering a fatal head injury when a gun was fired at a farm in Warcop, near Appleby, Cumbria.

The court heard that due to the seriousness of the offence, the case could only be dealt with by Carlisle Crown Court. Thursby, of Dent Place in Cleator Moor, is due to appear there for a plea and trial preparation hearing on 24 April.

Wearing a white shirt, black trousers and black coat, Thursby spoke only to confirm his name and personal details.

At the time of his death, Jay's parents, from Frizington, paid tribute to their son, who was a speedway and football fan.
