A man has been charged with gross negligence manslaughter over the death of an eight-year-old boy who was killed in a shooting at a farm.

Jay Cartmell suffered a fatal head injury when a gun was fired at a farm in Warcop, Cumbria, on 28 September 2024, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said.

Allan Thursby, 64, of Cleator Moor is due to appear at Carlisle Magistrates' Court on 26 March.

Malcolm McHaffie from the CPS said it was in the public interest to "pursue criminal proceedings" after an investigation by Cumbria Police.

"Our thoughts are with the family of Jay Cartmell at this time," he added.
