Prison capacity to increase by 240 places by 2027
BBCA prison's capacity is set to increase by 240 places.
The government has announced four new houseblocks will be built at HMP Northumberland which are set to be fully operational by 2027.
Around 70 new permanent roles are expected to be created when the houseblocks are completed at the prison which has more than 1,300 inmates, the government also said.
Minister for Prisons, Probation and Reducing Reoffending, Lord James Timpson said: "Alongside sentencing reform, this will create prisons that cut crime, reduce reoffending, and ensure there are fewer victims in the future."
A new workshop will also be built with six classroom and industry areas in the hope of giving prisoners the skills they need to stop reoffending.
The Labour government plans to build 14,000 prison places by 2031.
Lord Timpson said 2,900 places have already opened including a new 1,500-capacity prison in Yorkshire, HMP Millsike, last year.
