Bird flu case found in Norfolk

A bird flu case has been confirmed at a commercial poultry unit in Norfolk and a protection zone has been put in place.

The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) said the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 case had been confirmed near Ormesby St Margaret near Great Yarmouth.

A 3km (1.9 mile) protection zone and 10km (6.2 mile) surveillance zone have been put in place around the premises, and all poultry will be culled, the government department said.

The restrictions were applied on Friday at 20:00 GMT.

On Thursday, a new case of the bird flu was confirmed at Elveden in Suffolk, the second current case in the county, close to the border with west Norfolk.

Defra said the risk to the public was very low but people should not touch or move any dead or sick wild birds.
