Scammers impersonating local police officers have phoned residents and tried to get their bank details, police have warned.

Four potential victims in Great Yarmouth and the nearby villages of Hemsby, Scratby and Ormesby St Margaret received the calls from bogus officers on Saturday.

Norfolk Police said no money was taken and the calls were reported to them immediately.

"Unlike previous scams where the person calling claims to be from a police station elsewhere in the country, these scammers are impersonating local officers," police said.

Banks and the police would never ask for card and account details over the phone, nor the PIN, which should never be given to anybody, it added.

It advised people to hang up and ensure there was a dialling tone before calling police or use a different phone.

Fraudsters were known to stay on the line and play hold music and recorded messages to make victims believe they had called a legitimate number, police said.
