A woman has died after the car she was travelling in left the road and crashed into a tree.

North Yorkshire Police said a red Kia Stonic left the B6271 close to the Streetlam turn-off, near Northallerton, shortly before 19:00 GMT on Tuesday.

The driver of the car, a woman in her 70s, died at the scene, a police spokesperson said.

Officers thanked members of the public who stopped to help and asked anyone with information or footage of the incident to contact North Yorkshire Police.

A road closure was in place until 01:00 GMT.
