A girl was sexually assaulted at a house in Telford after a man entered the property through the back door.

The incident happened at about 15:00 GMT on Tuesday, 24 March, on Willowfield in Woodside.

The man, described as white, around 5ft 10in to 6ft 2in tall and wearing blue jeans, a black puffer jacket and fingerless gloves, touched the girl over her clothing.

Police said the man appeared to believe someone else was inside the house and left shortly afterwards. The incident was reported immediately.

Det Insp Corry Horobin said: "This is a deeply concerning incident, where thankfully, the young girl involved is safe, and we are providing her and her family with the support they need.

"We understand that reports like this can cause concern in the community but I want to reassure residents that incidents of this nature are rare and we have increased patrols in the area while our investigation continues."

She added that police were "working hard to identify the man involved" and urged people to be vigilant.

"If you were in the Willowfields area around 3pm on Tuesday or saw a man matching the description, please get in touch. Even the smallest piece of information could help us," she said.
