Anyone walking past City Hall in Bradford this week may have been excused for thinking they had gone back in time.

The outside of the Grade I listed Victorian building was transformed into 1940s post-war London by the makers of the All Creatures Great and Small TV series.

Extras in period clothing were filmed walking outside the Venetian-style building while an old red London bus and historical cars drove by.

Production crews also used hosepipes to dampen the streets while the public, with mobile phones in hand, were held behind metal barriers while filming took place.

All Creatures Great and Small was first turned into a TV series by the BBC in 1978 starring Christopher Timothy as fictional vet James Herriott.

It was based on books of the British veterinary surgeon Alf Wight, who wrote under the pseudonym James Herriot, and which were set in the Yorkshire Dales.

Channel 5 resurrected the series in 2020 and have since filmed extensively around West and North Yorkshire.

Last November, the station confirmed series seven and eight had been commissioned, each comprising of six, one-hour episodes plus Christmas specials.

The current series is made by London-based production company Playground and MASTERPIECE on the American PBS network.
