Force refers itself to watchdog over river search
Andrew WhiteHumberside Police has contacted the police watchdog as officers continue to search for two men who are believed to have entered the River Hull.
The force said it had referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) in connection with the incident on Friday evening.
The men were thought to have gone into the river after they fled from a car that crashed into a wall after police tried to stop it for having a faulty brake light.
"The referral is due to the prior police contact and police pursuit after the vehicle failed to stop for officers," a police spokesperson said.
On Saturday, Det Insp Andy Crawforth said officers were "extremely concerned" for the welfare of the men and urged anyone who may know of their whereabouts to contact police.
A search involving the Coastguard, Humberside Fire and Rescue Service and the police's Underwater Search Team has been taking place since the men were last seen at about 20:30 GMT in Charlotte Street close to North Bridge in the city centre.
An IOPC spokesperson said: "Following contact from Humberside Police, we have requested further information which we will assess in due course to determine whether an investigation is required."
