Water-filled sinkhole appears on residential road

Police said Park Avenue North and Park Avenue South were closed

A sinkhole filled with water has appeared on a residential road.

A resident of Park Avenue North in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, said they reported the hole to emergency services earlier.

When speaking to the BBC, a workman estimated the hole was about 16.4ft (5m) wide and 13.12ft (4m) deep.

Hertfordshire Constabulary has advised people to avoid the area as Park Avenue North and connecting road Park Avenue South were closed.

The hole appeared on Monday morning and is filled with water

Hertfordshire Council added: "We are aware of a sink hole in Park Avenue North, Harpenden, this morning and our Hertfordshire Highways team are on site along with Affinity Water.

"Park Avenue North, is currently closed for residents' safety and while we investigate the cause."

A spokesperson for Affinity Water said: "We're aware of the situation and are looking into it."
