City offices to be converted into student rooms

A Grade II listed city centre office building will be converted into student accommodation.

Pembroke College, part of the University of Cambridge, has received planning permission to convert the property at 12 Mill Lane, Cambridge.

Its plans include 13 student rooms, with shared bathrooms, kitchen and study spaces.

Cambridge City Council has granted the college permission to do the work, provided it starts within three years.

The college said its plans would also make the building more energy efficient, as reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Pembroke College owns both 12 Mill Lane and the building next door, 13 Mill Lane.

In its application, it said: "The building fabric for both buildings is generally in poor condition with some inappropriate materials.

"Therefore, an extensive programme of repairs, refurbishment and minor alterations is planned to be carried out."

A report into the proposal by planning officers highlighted that the building was currently vacant and "showing early signs of disrepair".

They added that converting the building into student housing would "allow for the fabric of the building to be improved and maintained through occupancy".

They also said there was a need for more student accommodation in Cambridge.
