Christmas Day saw a mountain emergency team complete its 100th rescue of the year.

Members of Patterdale Mountain Rescue headed out to Dove Crag in the Lake District at 17:45 GMT on Thursday.

A walker, who was with a friend, had been struggling with the "bitter cold" conditions and was wrapped in sleeping bags, the team said. The walker was given medical treatment on the fell and assisted off the hill by the volunteers.

A Patterdale spokesperson said reaching 100 rescues for the second-year running was a "significant milestone".

"It highlights the unwavering commitment of our members who… provide this professional service entirely for free, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year," they said.

One of the volunteers involved in the rescue was Labour MP Josh MacAlister.

He posted on social media on Friday that he had just managed to get through Christmas dinner before being called out.

He said: "I hope wherever you are and whatever you're doing you're having a lovely Christmas. And if you're going out on the fells please stay safe!"

The rescue took five hours and 30 minutes and involved nine members from the Patterdale team as well as 10 from the Penrith team.
