Lancaster bomber sculpture takes shape

The framework for a life-size sculpture of a Lancaster bomber has been completed, officials have said.

The tribute to RAF crews who served in World War Two will stand next to the A46 between Newark and Lincoln at Norton Disney.

The Bomber County Gateway Trust unveiled the sculpture at an event on Saturday.

Additional steelwork and cladding would then take place at the site, with a completion date of summer 2025.

Chairman of the trust, Ken Sadler, said when complete, the sculpture would reach a height of 98ft (30m) above ground, making it “taller than the Angel of the North”.

The aircraft would carry the markings of a bomber based at the former RAF Swinderby airfield nearby.

Mr Sadler said the aircraft would look like it is "heading home" when viewed on the horizon.

The trust said the project needed additional volunteers and a further £50,000 to complete the memorial.
