Plans for two large artworks to be installed in a North Yorkshire town as part of a multimillion-pound redevelopment scheme have been submitted.

The sculptures would be situated in the centre of Catterick Garrison and have been inspired by the area's military and railway heritage.

The first design is a series of sculptural totems positioned at key points in Coronation Park, while the second is a circular steel sculpture planned for the new town square.

Councillor Simon Myers, executive member for arts and culture at North Yorkshire Council, said: "These pieces will provide focal points for residents, visitors and members of our armed forces as part of this major redevelopment."

"They each tell a story and will be a source of both inspiration and pride, prompting conversation and ensuring Catterick's rich history is preserved for future generations," he added.

The totems have been designed by artist Katayoun Dowlatshahi, while the circular structure has been created by sculptor Sapien, also known as Steve Anwar.

The artworks were inspired by the town's history and designed with help from pupils at Colburn School, veterans' groups and local residents, a council spokesperson said.

A decision on the planning applications was expected to be made in the next few months, they added.

Work is already under way on a £21m town centre development project at Catterick Garrison, which will see a new civic square for events and a community hub created.

The scheme is currently on track to be completed by the end of 2026, according to the council.
