A major road in Derbyshire will be closed for "a number of days" due to emergency repairs to a gas pipe.

The A6 Haddon Road, near Bakewell, is closed between its junctions with the B5056 and Intake Lane due to a leak.

Gas infrastructure firm Cadent had been carrying out works on the road, with lights controlling traffic, but now a full diversion is in place.

Cadent said there should be no disruption to supplies but that work would have to include reinstating the road, and advised drivers to allow extra time for journeys.

A Cadent spokesperson said: "Everything is under control, with actions taken by Cadent's engineers to ensure safety and to keep gas flowing into local homes.

"It is likely this work will take a number of days, including the time that will be needed to reinstate the road afterwards to a condition which is safe to drive on.

"Until then, motorists will be guided to follow a signposted diversion route and to allow extra time for journeys.

"We know this is a busy road and that our work will cause disruption.

"This is essential work to deal with a safety-critical repair on the gas network, and we thank everyone in advance for their patience and understanding."

Access will be maintained to and from Haddon Hall via the B5056 end of the closure only.
