Memorable images as Eden Project marks 25th birthday
Clive NicholsAs the Eden Project celebrates 25 years, we look back on some of the biggest events which have taken place at the tourist attraction.
The site near St Austell, Cornwall, has not always been known for its famous biodomes and the world's largest indoor rainforest, as for 160 years it was a clay pit.
The Eden Project first opened its doors in March 2001 and since then, 25 million people have visited the attraction which has hosted many different events.
From 2002, it has held outdoor live music concerts called Eden Sessions and hosted events from the worldwide concert Live 8, in July 2005, to raise awareness of AIDS and poverty in Africa, to megastar Bryan Adams in July 2021 and June 2022.
In June 2021, the late queen, Elizabeth II, met with G7 leaders in Cornwall, with the evening reception held at the Eden Project.
Sir Tim Smit, co-founder of the Eden Project, described it as a "living theatre of plants and people, as well as a shop window into the exciting world coming towards us."
He added: "Eden is different because we take action and demonstrate rather than just talk. Our ultimate aim is to tell a moving and wonderful story filled with jeopardy and hope.
"Eden has always been a people story and the support we've had from so many institutions, organisations, individuals, communities and volunteers who backed this wild dream gives me goosebumps even now and I hope they feel proud of their part in its creation."
