Cornwall Council's leaders said the closures follows feedback after a six-month trial

More than 550 people have signed a petition calling for a "lifeline" bridge to be reopened to motorists.

Cornwall Council closed Old Bridge in Newlyn to traffic by installing bollards, which leaders said will make it "safer for pedestrians and cyclists".

But, residents who launched the petition said there was "significant concern" about closing the "lifeline" bridge, adding that using it "isn't a luxury, it's a necessity".

A council spokesperson said the closure would protect the Grade II-listed bridge and comes after feedback from a six-month trial.

The petition, launched by residents Julian Sincock, Julie Hamer, and Sue Bosworth, states that 84 out of the 123 trial respondents objected to the proposal, fearing it could worsen congestion, restrict parking, and negatively affect local businesses.

"It's vital for local commerce, providing easy access for delivery vehicles and customers. Business owners worry about decreased patronage as convenient access is a crucial factor for a thriving retail environment.

"Local shopkeepers and families rely on the bridge to maintain the flow of business and the economic vitality of the area," the petition states.

A council spokesperson said the six-month closure trial generated "valuable feedback, particularly regarding obstructive parking on both sides of Old Bridge".

"These concerns will be addressed by introducing clearer and more formalised parking arrangements.

"The bollards will be removable to allow emergency vehicle access if required," they added.
