A temporary new road will ensure customers can still get to a pub which would otherwise be cut off during the construction of flood defences.

The Environment Agency has applied for permission to create a short access route to the Grade II-listed Yew Tree pub in Walton-le-Dale, Lancashire.

Motorists currently reach it from Victoria Road - part of which will be shut for the flood defence works.

Plans have been submitted to South Ribble Borough Council, proposing a 25m (27yd) section of footpath near the A6 be dug up and replaced with a road that would connect to an existing loading bay that runs alongside the pub.

Together, the two facilities would provide a one-way route into the car park.

As vehicles would not be able to leave by the same way, it is also proposed that a gap is cut into a pavement to enable customers to exit.

The makeshift arrangements would be removed and the original road layout reinstated once the flood defence work was completed.
