A coastguard team was called to a beach after a member of the public found a potentially dangerous live flare.

Millom Coastguard Rescue Team was called to Haverigg Point in Cumbria after a floating orange daytime smoke flare was found resting on a tyre.

Flares contain explosives and are required by law to be disposed of at appropriate sites.

A spokesperson for the coastguard said if an "inquisitive child" had found the flare they could have suffered "serious burns".

The coastguard said they found the device after it was reported by a man who provided it with a very accurate location.

"We soon located the item, made it safe, then removed it from the beach," the spokesperson said.

"It will be disposed of at a later date."
