West Northamptonshire Council's cabinet has approved a local cycling and walking infrastructure plan (LCWIP) for Northampton for the next 10 years

Walking and cycling routes across Northampton have been earmarked for upgrades by a council.

West Northamptonshire Council's cabinet has approved a local cycling and walking infrastructure plan (LCWIP) for the town.

Shaped by a public consultation last autumn, the document sets out priority routes to help residents travel to work, school and local services - without relying on cars.

Because of Northampton's size, the council said it could not upgrade every cycle route, and ranked potential schemes by effectiveness and deliverability.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the proposed improvements include links between the town centre and Kings Heath, via the railway station.

Key town centre routes to Kingsthorpe, Upton, Moulton and Brackmills have also been identified for upgrades.

Further links have been proposed to outlying areas including Weedon Bec, Wellingborough and Roade.

Work will now start on developing the identified schemes in more detail, with further stakeholder engagement.

The council said the precise timescales and prioritisation of measures would depend on future funding.
