Westmorland and Furness Council will bring the 20mph zones into force later this year

A 20mph speed limit will come into force in 24 areas after plans were approved by a local authority.

Westmorland and Furness Council said a public consultation found there was "significant community support" for the new zones, which would be brought into force later this year.

More than 5,000 residents shared their views on the schemes across two consultations.

The council's cabinet member for highways Peter Thornton said the changes meant the council had lowered the speed limit to 20mph in 44 areas and would consider more applications later this year.

"These will include Castletown in Penrith, where the feedback last year was not conclusive one way or the other, so we feel the fairest way forward is to relook at that area separately," he said.

"Not only have communities requested these schemes be introduced through our new streamlined route but thousands of people have engaged with the process and helped shape them to ensure they better meet the needs of the communities."

The new 20mph schemes are being introduced in

  • Cambridge Primary School, Barrow
  • Cows Tarn Lane, Walney
  • Dane Ghyll Primary School, Barrow
  • Newbarns Primary School, Barrow
  • Ramsden Infant School, Barrow
  • Walney School
  • Sandy Gap Lane
  • Skirsgill Lane
  • Clifton
  • Gamblesby
  • Glassonby
  • Great Asby

  • Sockbridge & Tirril
  • Stainton
  • Cartmel
  • Greenodd and Penny Bridge

Meanwhile, the 20mph zone at St Paul's Junior School will be joined with the scheme outside Victoria Infant and Nursery School and Victoria Junior School, in Barrow.

Thornton said the new limits would make streets "safer for all" while also encouraging their wider use for those "walking, wheeling or cycling".
