Three cases of bird flu have been detected in wildfowl in Bedford.

Bedford Borough Council said avian influenza had been found in one swan and one goose on the town's embankment and one bird at Priory Park by the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).

Public information posters have been put up in areas where the infected birds were found.

It has advised people to keep to the footpaths, to keep dogs on leads and to not touch or pick up any sick or dead birds.

The council also warned people not to touch wild bird feathers or surfaces contaminated with wild bird droppings.

It asked anyone to report any dead wild birds to DEFRA online or to call 03459 33 55 77.
