The library is expected to reopen on 20 January

A library will be closed for about a week from 13 January to allow for works to repair internal water damage.

The bank and children's centre at Biggleswade Library in Bedfordshire will not be affected.

The damage was caused by an issue with the external drainage which has now been fixed.

Tracey Wye, the independent councillor responsible for library services at Central Bedfordshire Council, appreciated it was not ideal to have to close the library but it would "allow the work to be done in less time while keeping everyone safe".

To minimise disruption, all items currently on loan from Biggleswade Library will be automatically renewed until 30 January.

Anyone wishing to exchange items before the library reopens can visit nearby libraries at Sandy or Potton and books can still be borrowed at any library in Central Bedfordshire.

The registration service will not be offering appointments during the closure but appointments can be made at the Ampthill office.

Wye said: "After the wonderful refurbishment of the library it is a real shame to see the water damage, which came from the external drainage system.

"This period just after Christmas and before the February half term is also one of the quieter times for library use.

"We thank customers for their patience and understanding while these necessary works are completed."
