New bins and waste collections on their way
Middlesbrough CouncilNew bins, food caddies and extra collections are to be rolled out across a town as part of changes to its waste and recycling services.
Middlesbrough Council said it was part of a government drive to improve recycling rates and hoped the changes would make a "real and lasting difference".
Households will receive two food waste caddies and either a new wheelie bin or sacks to recycle paper and cardboard, with deliveries running from the beginning of March to the end of June.
It comes as the local authority received nearly 6,500 reports of fly-tipping over the past 12 months.
The council said people would receive information about the changes over the coming weeks.
Households would be provided with a small food waste caddy for their kitchen and a larger one to be kept outside and emptied each week, the local authority said.
They would also receive a roll of compostable bin liners and a guide to the new bins.
Homes that already have wheelie bins are to also receive a new red-lidded one for free fortnightly collections of paper and cardboard, while homes without will receive red sacks.
The current blue-lidded bin would continue to be used for plastics, glass and tins, helping to reduce contamination, the council said.
Councillor Peter Gavigan, member for environment and sustainability, said: "These are some of the biggest changes to the way we collect waste and recycling for many years, so we'll do everything we can to make the transition as smooth as possible.
"It's all part of our overall aim to improve our recycling rates, and we will be working alongside our residents to make a real and lasting difference."
