Royal Papworth Hospital said 147 devices had not been given back

A hospital has warned that some appointments could be cancelled because sleep study equipment has not been returned by patients.

Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge said the CSS equipment was given out for a single overnight study and staff were expecting it to be returned the following day.

In a message to patients on social media, the hospital said about 147 devices were missing, estimating that about 1,000 people a year could miss out on care as a result.

It urged for anyone who has one of the devices to return it as soon as possible or to contact the hospital.

A spokesperson for the service stressed that the appeal was not intended to blame patients and acknowledged that "life sometimes gets in the way".

"Returning the device promptly makes a real difference," they added.

"It helps us care for more people, more quickly."
