Car cruisers fined in nuisance driving crackdown

Fines have been issued to 36 people in a crackdown on car cruising around a village in Leicestershire.

North West Leicestershire District Council said the £100 penalties were given out last week during an operation to tackle problems, including street racing and road blocking by drivers meeting in and around Castle Donington.

The authority banned car cruising in parts of the village in 2021 using a public spaces protection order (PSPO), which was then extended to cover all of Castle Donington and Hemington in 2024.

The council said eight vehicles had also been seized during joint operations with Leicestershire Police in the last 12 months.

The PSPO is enforced by police patrols and CCTV cameras using automatic number plate recognition technology.

Michael Wyatt, the council's deputy leader, said: "We have heard the concerns of people living in and around Castle Donington about the menace of car cruising, and the issues such as littering and noise disturbance that come with it."
