Tyne and Wear Metro trains have resumed after a cable theft forced some services to be suspended.

Trains were unable to run between Wallsend and Monkseaton, in North Tyneside, from about 09:20 until 13:40 GMT.

Operator Nexus said the thefts occurred in the Tynemouth area and it sent engineers to repair the damage.

A spokesperson said stealing cables from the network was dangerous and anyone caught doing so could face a prison sentence.

"Cable theft causes disruption for the travelling public," they said.

"It is dangerous to tamper with trackside equipment, which has high voltage power running through it, and the thieves risk their lives by doing this."

Northumbria Police said it received a report that cables had been stolen from Hudson Street, close to North Shields Metro Station, sometime between 05:00 and 06:35 GMT.

No arrests have been made in connection with the theft.

During the suspension, Metro tickets were accepted on Arriva and Go North East bus routes in the affected area.
