Jersey Development Company said the roof refurbishment at Fort Regent was "essential"

Plans have been submitted to refurbish a leisure centre's roof in a bid to restore its original look from the 1970s.

Jersey Development Company (JDC) said it wanted to remove and replace Fort Regent's wave form and dome roof coverings as part of a redevelopment project of the St Helier venue.

JDC said the the roof, which was built in 1974 and is Grade II listed, had deteriorated due to its age and the work would be "essential to protect the building's integrity and ensure public safety".

Plans for the site include a 2,500-seat theatre, a 12-lane bowling alley, a six-screen cinema, play areas, climbing and bouldering facilities and places to eat and drink.

JDC said the project would include replacing roof coverings and glazing systems along with "improving weatherproofing generally".

"This refurbishment will secure Fort Regent's long-term future, safeguard its heritage value and support its continued used as a community and cultural venue as part of the broader regeneration plans," it added.

The States of Jersey is set to borrow an initial £43m to fund the first phase of upgrading Fort Regent.
