A recycling centre on Merseyside has been evacuated after reports a "mortar bomb" has been found there.

Police said the "suspicious object" was found at Bidston Household Waste Recycling Centre, Wirral, just after 09:00 BST.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit has been contacted to confirm what the object is, Merseyside Police said.

The site on Wallasey Bridge Road has been closed and cordoned off. People are advised to avoid the area.
