Motorists are being warned of traffic disruption as a busy city centre road is closed for gas pipe works.

A full closure at the junction of the A38 Gloucester Road and Dorian Road, near Horfield Leisure Centre, in Bristol, came into place earlier and will remain until 29 May.

Wales and West Utilities said the project, part of its £15m investment to replace more than 21 miles (34km) of gas pipes across the city over the next 12 months, will "keep gas flowing safely" for "decades to come".

Bristol City Council said a diversion would be in place, with bus services also affected.

Residents are advised to expect noise, traffic and parking disruption, with gas supply to some properties also temporarily turned off.

Wales and West Utilities thanked residents, businesses and road-users for their understanding and said the work was "essential" in ensuring the gas network is ready to "transport green gases in the future".

Further delays are expected on the same road, while the A38 Gloucester Road North/Braemar Avenue/Northville Road roundabout in Filton continues to be closed on weeknights for resurfacing and safety improvements.

South Gloucestershire Council said the "casualty reduction" scheme - introduced because "more than three quarters of collisions at the roundabout involve cyclists or motorbikes" - would cause disruption until mid-July.
