A historic abbey has been given a £100,000 grant to support an ongoing £5m heritage project.

The Delapre Abbey Preservation Trust in Northampton is currently restoring and renovating its 19th Century stables into a multi-purpose space for wellbeing, retail and events.

The funding comes from the Garfield Weston Foundation, which supports charities across the UK working to improve local communities.

Richard Clinton, chief executive of the abbey trust, said the new hub would "support those most in need", while helping to "enhance [the abbey's] financial and overall sustainability".

Part of the money will go on installing a ground source heat pump and solar panels, which the abbey said could save it £13,000 a year in energy costs.

A fundraising campaign called 'Stable Stories' has also been set up, allowing supporters to have their names commemorated on metal plates within the refurbished complex.

Work started on the project last summer and is on track to be completed this summer season.
