Warning to avoid boating lake as repairs continue
BBCVisitors to Abbey Park in Leicester are being advised to avoid the boating lake as works continue to take place.
Problems with a Victorian pipe installed when the park was created have led to water levels falling each summer, and work has been ongoing since October 2025 to resolve the issue.
Leicester City Council said the water feed connection from the canal has been damaged over time due to tree roots, with warmer weather also contributing to water levels becoming more shallow.
The authority said it expected work to be completed by spring.
A spokesperson added: "The damaged pipe, combined by increasingly warmer weather, means the water level in the lake has been getting progressively lower each summer, and was left almost empty last year.
"We are working with a specialist contractor to install a new borehole water feed system which will replace the historical piping. The borehole will function as a water supply system for the lake during warmer periods or periods of drought."
