Cumberland Council said almost 100kg of rubbish was found in Carlisle

A council said it was forced to "divert valuable resources" to deal with a heap of rubbish fly-tipped at the side of a road.

Cumberland Council said it discovered about 100kg of waste illegally dumped near Newman School in Carlisle.

The Labour-led authority warned it was investigating the incident and those responsible could face prosecution.

Denise Rollo, executive member for sustainable places, said she was disappointed but commended teams who swiftly cleared the rubbish.

"Unfortunately, the offender chose not to use the correct facilities for waste disposal," she said.

"This careless and thoughtless act has forced Cumberland Council to divert valuable resources to resolve a problem that could have been easily avoided."

She said the council took fly-tipping seriously.

"Fly-tipping is more than just an eyesore - it poses serious risks to public health and the environment, attracting vermin, polluting natural habitats, and creating hazards for the community."
