Plans have been lodged to create a new forecourt entrance to Carlisle Station and a piazza space to its rear

Images have been released showing how a new entrance to a railway station could look following its redevelopment.

Cumberland Council previously announced it would spend £28m on redesigning Carlisle Station and has now lodged plans which it claimed will create a "focal point" for visitors.

The designs include the creation of a new forecourt entrance to the north of the station as well as a new piazza space, called George Square, to the south.

Planning documents state the aim of the project is to "improve access and passenger links" to the south side of the station as well as making changes inside.

The application shows work will be carried out on land between Water Street and James Street and includes a new car park, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The existing site will be widened to make it more accessible to cars and the public

"The Southern Gateway project encompasses the development of a new station piazza space, George Square, along with increased vehicle parking provision for staff and visitors," it states.

"This will expand parking capacity to the station's rear, diverting most vehicular traffic from the station's north toward the south."

The council said the redevelopment of the area would "grow the regional role of the station".

The existing site was previously used as a retail park, consisting of a Matalan and Staples which have since been demolished.

The road will be realigned as part of the scheme.
